As Level Media blog - Hannah P

Our first research task was to analyse an edition of vibe. We had to identify the main features and come to grips with the magazines house style this was hard to do because we only had to pages. However we could still get a feeling from the first to pages.
Our next task was to analyse an advert from the a music magazine to see how the advertising is linked to target audience. We could see that the overall house style of the magazine affected the adverts because if it was a feminine magazine then there were more feminine adverts like the advert I have chosen.

Primary Market Research

This was our first piece of market research we asked people from our sixth form, in our target audience to fill out a questionnaire about their likes dislikes, demographic information and their preferences for magazine and the contents that we should or should not put in.

The general feedback that was received from my questionnaire was that they all had similar likes and dislikes and they were music, studying, going out with friends and even some gamers.  For question 1 the respondents said they would subscribe. For question 2 the majority said that they read it for content, entertainment information and even competitions.  For question 3 there were a variety of answers one common one was a contents.  For question 4 the respondents general consensus was generally yes. For question 6 the unanimous answer was yes so this is key for this target audience. For question 7 there were many answers as it is an open question and therefore any answer could be given one good answer was the weekly horoscopes and agony aunt column. Finally question 8 again had a variety of answers one good one was that they were neat and tidy and had a set structure. This possibly could mean something to do with the house style of the magazine, to keep it constant clean and precise.

These are two of the results from the questionnaire. It shows gender and religion. We can see that more females were surveyed and there was an equal amount of Atheists and Muslims.
Focus Group Research

This was my other type of research I performed it was a focus group of four people; two males and two females aged from 16-18. There overall opinion was that the ideas that i had were good but need a little more developed  to reach a high standard. The general consensus for the fonts was that they were quite feminine and if I wanted to appeal to a wider audience then I would have to maybe get thicker, san seriffed, bolder fonts. This was an acceptable idea because my target audience is both male and female.

These three colour schemes were the most popular however they could not agree on one as everyone had a different opinion. It was really personal preference this indicates to me that i have to use non gender bias colours or colours that are normally associated with a certain gender e.g: blue for a boy and pink for a girl.
The most popular cover was the GQ cover as they said this one looked the most professional, clean and sleek look. I will try to achieve this with my magazine cover. It is clearly better to have a low number of puffs but also to have either a head close-up or mid shot for the front cover.
The general consensus was that all puffs were of a good standard and were acceptable to use but some maybe be slightly far fetched or unrealistic.
The mock up was well received and they said that it looked realistic, the girls said that the colour scheme was really good which was contrasted to the boys opinions. Some constructive criticism they gave was to not cover the body with the puffs and to use more masculine colours. Also it would have been better to use a mid shot instead to a full length portrait.

Evaluation Question 5- How did you attract/address your audience?

How did you attract/address your audience?
Below is a video of my target audience covering their first perceptions of my magazine. I have also written up my question and answer session from the video and this is pasted below.

Q/A: What are your first impressions of the magazine?
I like it, it looks quite professional and up market.  I like the concept of the magazine, it seems innovative and original.
Does it, in your opinion, look like a magazine that you would find on a magazine stand?
I think it does, as I said before it looks quite professional and  it has a lot of the normal magazine features.
What are its strengths and weaknesses?
Well I’ll do strengths first,  One strength would be, I liked how you used the same colour as her dress as in title that gives it more flow and also I like the use of bringing in the white writing on the background to make it stand out. It also has quite a glossy feel to it.  On the front cover I also like the sticker/ Banner it blends the writing with the banner. Ok so the weaknesses, it is hard but I would say that maybe  The orange on the front page is too bright and means that it’s not in keeping with the house style.
What would you change about the magazine to make it more realistic?
I would make the tag-line slightly bigger and change the colour scheme around a bit other than that it is a good product I really like it and would buy it if I had the chance.
Thank you for your time and opinions they are deeply appreciated.

I also attracted my target audience through social media/networking by creating a Facebook page for my magazine. This meant that I could broaden and specify my target audience. People were allowed to make comments and also suggestions for improvements.

Evaluation Question 6- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

have learnt a great deal about technologies from the process of constructing my product. I used many technologies such as;

I used a variety of tools in each of the four programmes above. In blogger I learnt how to embed videos and to create multi-media posts. I mainly used piknik to edit my image. I used it to adjust the brightness, exposure and contrast and I also used the airbrushing tool to airbrush my model slightly but also the background.

Evaluation Question 7 - Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
