Our first research task was to analyse an edition of vibe. We had to identify the main features and come to grips with the magazines house style this was hard to do because we only had to pages. However we could still get a feeling from the first to pages.
Our next task was to analyse an advert from the a music magazine to see how the advertising is linked to target audience. We could see that the overall house style of the magazine affected the adverts because if it was a feminine magazine then there were more feminine adverts like the advert I have chosen.
Primary Market Research
This was our first piece of market research we asked people
from our sixth form, in our target audience to fill out a questionnaire about
their likes dislikes, demographic information and their preferences for
magazine and the contents that we should or should not put in.
The general feedback that
was received from my questionnaire was that they all had similar likes and
dislikes and they were music, studying, going out with friends and even some
gamers. For question 1 the respondents
said they would subscribe. For question 2 the majority said that they read it
for content, entertainment information and even competitions. For question 3 there were a variety of
answers one common one was a contents.
For question 4 the respondents general consensus was generally yes. For
question 6 the unanimous answer was yes so this is key for this target
audience. For question 7 there were many answers as it is an open question and
therefore any answer could be given one good answer was the weekly horoscopes
and agony aunt column.
Finally question 8
again had a variety of answers one good one was that they were neat and tidy
and had a set structure. This possibly could mean something to do with the
house style of the magazine, to keep it constant clean and precise.
These
are two of the results from the questionnaire. It shows gender and religion. We
can see that more females were surveyed and there was an equal amount of
Atheists and Muslims.
Focus group
This was my other type of research I performed it was a
focus group of four people; two males and two females aged from 16-18. There
overall opinion was that the ideas that i
had were good but need a little more developed
to reach a high standard. The general consensus for the fonts was that
they were quite feminine and if I wanted to appeal to a wider audience then I would have to maybe
get thicker, san seriffed, bolder fonts. This was an acceptable idea because my
target audience is both male and female.
These three colour schemes were the most popular however
they could not agree on one as everyone had a different opinion. It was really
personal preference this indicates to me that i
have to use non gender bias colours or colours that are normally associated
with a certain gender e.g: blue for a boy and
pink for a girl.
The most popular cover was the GQ cover as they said
this one looked the most professional, clean and sleek look. I will try to
achieve this with my magazine cover. It is clearly better to have a low number
of puffs but also to have either a head close-up or mid shot for the front
cover.
The general consensus was that all puffs were of a good
standard and were acceptable
to use but some maybe
be slightly far fetched or unrealistic.
The mock up was well received and they said that it
looked realistic, the girls said that
the colour scheme was really good which was contrasted to the boys opinions.
Some constructive criticism
they gave was to not
cover the body with the puffs and to use more masculine colours. Also it would
have been better to use a mid shot instead to a full length portrait.
